There’s so much to see and do within just a few minutes’ drive from Crow House Barn. Local attractions like Fountains Abbey and Ripon Cathedral are world-renowned and host events throughout the year. Further afield there are fabulous  walks at Malham and the Cleveland Way in the North Yorkshire National Park. Beautiful stately homes, stunning arboretums, sculpture parks, theme parks, horse racing, the biggest agricultural show in the country… the list is endless!

Walking

Crow House Barn is the perfect place for walking. You can walk to neighbouring villages and further afield with scarcely any roads to cross through picturesque countryside. Please remember to follow footpaths and close gates as all our immediate neighbours are farmers.

Cycling

Following the success of the Tour de France and the Tour de Yorkshire and most recently the UCI Road World Championships based in Harrogate, Yorkshire is now one of the foremost cycling areas in Europe.  For cycling enthusiasts of all abilities, this is the perfect base for your cycling holiday.

Wildlife

Our unspoilt countryside is a haven for all sorts of wildlife from roe deer and badgers to kingfishers and woodpeckers. Early mornings start with joyous birdsong and evenings are punctuated with hoots from little owls and the occasional shriek of a fox. Red kites and buzzards are increasing in numbers with their spectacular wing spans.

Good Food

Yorkshire is a magnet for gastronomes! With five Michelin-starred restaurants in the county –  three within 40 minutes’ drive of the Barn. We particularly recommend the Black Swan at Olstead for wonderful fresh ingredients beautifully cooked.

Nearby Harrogate is crammed with great places to eat from the fabulous Orchid with its Pacific Rim delights to London-based newcomer, The Ivy.

Pubs in the area offer a range of gastropub delights or, for much simpler fare, our two locals – the Royal Oak in Burton Leonard and the Royal Oak at Staveley (yes really!) offer excellent value and full plates!

Market Towns

Crow House Barn is equidistant between Ripon and Knaresborough, both of which have excellent markets each week as well as regular farmers’ markets locally. Boroughbridge is a busy town with a thriving high street and Ripon (which is a city really but the size of a town) has plenty of tiny independent retailers and some great cafes. Further afield, Northallerton has a bustling high street, twice-weekly market and the best deli we’ve ever found in Lewis and Cooper. Harrogate is the sophisticated shopper’s paradise with most of the top clothes and interiors retailers as well as a good number of quirky independents. Cafes and bars as well as Bettys Tea Rooms (an institution in these parts) are plentiful and you can graze all day. Parking is free for 3 hours outside the town centre so borrow a parking disc from us and enjoy your day!

Shopping

For city shopping, both York and Leeds are only 40 minutes away with plenty of parking (or park and ride) or a regular train service from nearby Knaresborough. York boasts plenty of quirky shops with an eye to the tourist and Harry Potter looms large in the Shambles, the ancient street which was the model for Diagon Alley! Leeds has beautiful arcade shops – both nation brands and independents, and Harvey Nichols.
